dropping a lopsided majority decision to pound-for-pound king Floyd
Mayweather in last September's boxing event of the year, Saul "Canelo"
Alvarez and his team quickly announced an aggressive plan to return the
Mexican superstar to the top of the sport.
And on Tuesday, it seems as though Part 1 of that plan has come into focus.
The
cinnamon-haired former junior middleweight champion will face the
rugged and dangerous Alfredo "Perro" Angulo on March 8 at the MGM Grand
in Las Vegas.
This fight has the potential for all sorts of drama
and excitement. Here we set you up right with a complete head-to-toe
breakdown of the fight and the fighters.
Golden Boy Promotions
CEO Richard Schaefer is telling us that Alfredo Angulo has earned the
right to fight Canelo Alvarez. But he hasn't earned it through a series
of wins over top competition. Instead, according to Schaefer, it's
Angulo's exciting style in the ring that has given him the opportunity
to face Canelo in a pay-per-view fight on March 8.
Here's exactly what Schaefer had to say, via Boxing Scene's Keith Idec:
"You don't just get the opportunity, you earn the opportunity. And I
think Alfredo has earned that in the way he fights. Boxing has really
moved (in a direction), I think, particularly in the last couple of
years or so, where excitement, win or lose, is being more rewarded. And
fighters don't really have to go back in the line if they lose in
exciting fashion. And sometimes, an exciting loss these days is frankly
more valuable than a boring win."
What Schaefer says here is no
secret. Even though he claims that boxing is moving toward favoring
exciting fighters win or lose, it's always favored them to a certain
degree. There's a reason why HBO brought Arturo Gatti back a billion
times no matter how often he lost to guys like Ivan Robinson or Angel
Manfredy. We all knew, win or lose, we would get our money's worth when
he stepped into the ring.
Angulo is a pressure fighter who will
come forward, right to Canelo. That's why he was picked for Canelo's
comeback fight, and Schaefer is pretty much admitting this. He's the
opposite of Floyd Mayweather, Canelo's previous opponent. Angulo also
has a different style from the man who beat him in his last fight, Cuban
southpaw Erislandy Lara. If Canelo's opponent was based on pure wins
and losses, Lara would be getting the call.
